Academic Advising Description/Definition
Academic advising is an educational process that, by intention and design, facilitates students’ understanding of the meaning and purpose of higher education and fosters their intellectual and personal development toward academic success and lifelong learning. (NACADA, 2004)
Purpose of Advisement
- To assist students in developing educational plans that are consistent with their life goals.
- To provide students with accurate information about academic progression and degree requirements.
- To assist students in understanding academic policies and procedures.
- To help students access campus resources that will enhance their ability to be academically successful.
- To assist students in overcoming educational and personal problems.
- To identify systemic and personal conditions that may impede student academic achievement and developing appropriate interventions.
- To review and use available data about students academic and educational needs, performance, aspirations and problems.
- To increase student retention by providing a personal contact that students often need and request, thereby connecting them to the institution,
Advisor’s Responsibilities
- To create a welcoming and safe environment where students feel comfortable discussing academic, career and life goals.
- To provide information about, and assist students with, college policies, regulations, programs, and procedures.
- To keep regular office hours and be adequately available to meet with students.
- To offer advice on selecting courses and to assist students in developing an academic plan that satisfies degree requirements.
- To assist students in developing and education plan that is consistent with each student’s abilities and interests. (course loads, academic background, program demands, life commitments, etc.)
- To be a responsive listener and to refer students to appropriate support services within the college.
- To discuss students’ academic performance and the implications of their performance for the undergraduate, graduate, and/or professional programs students desires to pursue.
- To monitor student progress toward educational and career goals and to keep accurate, up-to-date records of their academic progress.
- To respect the student’s right to privacy of educational records.
- To help students assume responsibility for their own decisions and actions.
Student Responsibilities
- To take the initiative to contact their advisor at least once a year.
- To have and be familiar with the Academic Catalog, the Course Schedule and their student record in DUCK.
- To prepare a list of courses, questions or concerns before each meeting.
- To gather all relevant decision-making information that will assist with the advisement appointment.
- To seek resources that will assist them in making academic and career decisions.
- To ask questions and be knowledgeable about university and school procedures, policies and requirements.
- To be familiar with their degree requirements.
- To be aware of the prerequisites and grade requirements for each course.
- To follow college procedures for course registration and adjustments.
- To observe academic deadlines.
- To keep a personal record of their degree progress and official university documents (program worksheets, copy of schedule changes and advisement appointment notes, etc.).
- To inform an advisor or the Dean's Office immediately whenever a serious problem (medical, financial, personal) disrupts the student’s ability to attend classes or interferes with one’s ability to focus on his/her education.
- To make final decisions and be actively responsible for their academic career.
